Introduction

Our first attempt at this walk was in torrential rain and the first uphill part was mostly like walking up waterfalls. The second attempt, in good weather, was a dream. The end of the walk is a real treat, bringing you through an unexpectedly pretty wood which opens out to a verdant swathe of land leading to the bay with its broad vista of Eigg and Rhum and south to the Ardnamurchan peninsular.

There were a number of small communities on this peninsular in the past, the remains of which can be seen if you venture off the main track at various points. There are still locals living in the area who were brought up at Peanmanach.

Route

• A popular, moderate walk starting at car park on the left near Polnish (2 miles north of Lochailort on A82 - MultiMap).

• Go west from the car park, past Polnish House and over the railway track.

• The track climbs up and around the lochans, with views west to Eigg, Rhum and Skye, and north over Loch nan Uamh. It leads down through woods down to the much loved and frequented Peanmeanach bothy at the picturesque bay on the west end of the peninsular.

How long it takes depends on how many detours you are tempted into and how long you lie on the beach soaking up the sun, or brewing up in the bothy at the far end. Could be done in a 3 hour round trip if you need to rush.
