Introduction

Given the poor weather forecast for the day perhaps we were chancing our luck in tackling these two hills. The web however is a wonderful place... so armed with a detailed breakdown of the most positive weather report we could find online we set off for Loch Quoich.

On previous occassions I had passed the start of the road to Kinloch Hourn several times and so was looking forward to exploring this area further.

We had planned to climb these two hills staring at the Allt Coire Peitireach following the stalkers path to Gleouriach then along the ridge to Spidean Mialach. From Spidean Mialach we planned to descend into Coire Mheil picking up another stalkers path. When we arrived at the starting point a sign posted by the Glen Elg Estate asked walkers to avoid Coire Mheil and to stay off the stalkers path crossing through it.

Due to deer management we were requested to keep to the ridge to the East of the Allt a' Mheil. The sign also stated that during the stalking season, 7 weeks from early August the whole area should be avoided.

Route

• The start point is a stalkers path adjacent to the Allt Coire Peitireach. Parking is available for several cars opposite the start point.

• Follow the stalkers path along side the Allt Coire Peitireach quickly gaining height. After approximately 150 m the path leaves the river and turns NW.

• Continue on the path until it runs out below the final summit, GR 035053.

• A rough track continues to the summit cairn. 1035 m, GR 039054.

• From Gleouriach follow the ridge E around the top of Garbh Coire Mor following the well trodden path over the summit of Craig Coire na Fiar Bhealaich, 1006 m, GR 047052.

• From here a stalkers path descends steeply to the col at GR 054048, 740 m.

• From the col continue on the path to the summit, 996 m, GR 066043.

• From the summit a well worn path descends SW to Loch Fearna. Follow this as far as Coire Mheil. If there are no restrictions continue to the stalkers path which returns to the road a few hundred meters to the east of the start point.

If the restrictions are in place you are asked to follow the ridge to the E of Allt A' Mheil returning to the road at GR 041022. This leaves a walk of just over a kilometre to the car.
