Introduction
As you have perhaps already read in my route to Ben Hope, Ben
Klibreck can be climbed on the same day as Ben Hope as there
is only a 30 minute drive between the two hills. On the summit
we met a large group who were planning on visiting both peaks
in the same day. We however, took the hillwalking at a more
leisurely pace and enjoyed Ben Hope the day before. Lairg was
the base point, which was ideal given that it's situated about
30 minutes from the start point for this hill walk.
Ben Klibreck is a large hill encompassing several summits the
highest being Meall nan Con. The whole ridge could be traversed
easily by starting from Vagastie. We opted for the more direct
approach starting several kilometres further north along the
A836. The photos provide a great overview of the day; although,
if this was shopping page there would have to be hearty disclaimer
detailing how "Goods may be found in significantly different
to condition to the advertisement." I particularly
like the shot above from Altnaharra showing the clouds just
clambering up the back of the hill... blue sky can just be a
bit boring sometimes... can't it?! |

Route
- The start
point we used for this walk is a large lay-by on the side
of the A836. There is space for several cars here.
- From the car follow the obvious track down to the river
and cross over. We had no problem. If the river is in spate
(avoiding the obvious puns...) it could be crossed by a bridge
located 2 km south along the A836, GR NC538289. Parking is
available here on the side of the road.
- Once over the river pick up a rough track skirting the deer
fence. This track soon peters out. Head SE aiming for the
southern edge of Loch na Glas-choille, GR 557303.
- From this loch follow the fence posts skirting to the north
of Meall nan Uan to the northern edge of Loch na Uan, GR 568296.
- From here there is only one way and that's up. It's a case
of choosing the gradient you are happiest with and going for
it. We contoured S then aiming for a break in the rocks just
below the ridge headed straight up before contouring North
again to hit the col, 688m GR 577291.

- A gentler approach could have been made by starting further
S on the A836, GR 538289 or GR 535282 and picking up the SW
ridge of Ben Klibreck.
- From the col follow the track to the minor top A'Chioch,
747m GR NC579299.
- The track continues almost due West climbing steeply to
the summit of Meall nan Con, 961m GR 585299.
- To return retrace steps to the col, 688m GR 577291 and pick
up a rough track that picks its way down through the crags.

- Once on the open hillside the only way is down. The decent
is steep but it was easy going due to the damp ground.
- Head for the track on the East side of Loch nan Uan and
retrace steps north of the loch picking up the fence line
again.
- Skirt the south edge of Loch na Glas-choille returning
to the car by the earlier route.
